Formation and Early Years of Journey Band
Former Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch members founded Journey in San Francisco in 1973. Neal Schon (guitar), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), George Tickner (rhythm guitar), Ross Valory (bass), and Prairie Prince (drums) were original members of the band. Initially focusing on progressive rock, their music was experimental but could not attain widespread commercial success.
Aynsley Dunbar took Prairie Prince’s position on drums after he departed the band in 1974. This was the first of several lineup changes that would characterize Journey’s growth. Following the publication of their self-titled debut album in 1975, the band went on to release Next (1977) and Look into the Future (1976).
